Ugandan Students in Malaysia Convene for High-Level Gathering in Kuala Lumpur
KUALA LUMPUR, March 22, 2026 — Ugandan students studying across Malaysia gathered at the Ibis Hotel Kuala Lumpur for a landmark event organized by the Uganda High Commission, bringing together students, officials, and stakeholders for an afternoon of dialogue, networking, and community building. Held from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the gathering underscored the growing presence of the Ugandan student diaspora in Malaysia while creating a platform to discuss academic opportunities, professional development, and the importance of maintaining strong ties with home.
The event began with arrival, registration, and networking, as students from various universities connected in a lively and welcoming atmosphere that set the tone for the day. The official program commenced with an opening prayer led by Kajoba Rahim, followed by welcome remarks from Master of Ceremonies Ssemudu Imran, who emphasized unity and collaboration among Ugandan students abroad. A key highlight of the event was the keynote address delivered by H.E. Dr. Betty Bigombe, who encouraged students to pursue excellence in their studies while embracing their roles as ambassadors of Uganda on the global stage, urging them to leverage their international exposure for both personal growth and national development. The program continued with presentations, including insights from Mr. Mohd Kamaruzzaman Mohd Ismail of UniKL, who spoke about academic opportunities and institutional support available to international students, followed by Dr. Kabuye Uthman, who addressed diaspora engagement and stressed the importance of maintaining connections with Uganda while contributing to its progress. An interactive Q&A session moderated by Akugizibwe Richard Biribonwaho provided students with the opportunity to engage directly with speakers, raising questions on career prospects, academic challenges, and diaspora opportunities, reflecting the aspirations and concerns of Ugandan students abroad.
