The Ugandan community in Malaysia joins our brothers and sisters at home and across the diaspora in mourning the untimely passing of His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro Kingdom.
It is with heavy hearts that we received the news of the loss of a young and visionary traditional leader who ascended the throne as a child and grew into a symbol of continuity, culture and hope for the people of Tooro and all of Uganda. His early departure at just 34 years of age is a profound loss that touches every Ugandan, near and far.
A reign that began in childhood
Born on 16 April 1992, Omukama Oyo ascended the throne of Tooro in 1995 at the age of three, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. His accession made him the world’s youngest reigning monarch at the time, and he became the thirteenth Omukama of a kingdom whose history stretches back some 180 years.
He reigned for thirty-one years. Over three decades, the boy king grew into a monarch who carried the traditions, language and identity of the Batooro forward into a new century, and who represented Tooro with dignity at home and abroad.
His Majesty passed away on the evening of 27 August 2026 in the United States, where he had been receiving medical treatment. The Prime Minister (Omuhikirwa) of Tooro Kingdom, Mr Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, announced his death, describing it as an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda. President Yoweri Museveni later said the King had been battling aggressive cancer, having received care in Germany and subsequently in the United States.
The Kingdom has confirmed that the succession of the Crown continues, and that His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir.
