Mentoring new students
The most useful thing an alumnus can offer is an hour of honest conversation with someone starting out. Not formal mentorship with a structure and a schedule — just being willing to take the call.
Every year Ugandans graduate from Malaysian universities and move on — into work here, back home, or onward somewhere else. The network they leave behind is one of the most valuable things this community has.
A student arriving in Kuala Lumpur next month will face questions that someone in this community answered three years ago. Which supervisor to approach. How to handle a pass renewal running late. Whether a neighbourhood is worth the rent. What to do when funding falls through mid-programme.
Knowledge moves person to person — and only if people stay reachable.

Assistantships, internships, graduate schemes and research openings are often filled through word of mouth before they are ever advertised. Alumni hear about these first. Passing one on costs nothing and can change someone’s year.
Graduates who return to Uganda, and those who stay, sit on both sides of a relationship with room to grow well beyond ceremonial engagement — into research collaboration, professional exchange and practical partnerships between institutions.
Community events, National Day, the Cancer Run, student gatherings. Familiar faces from a few years ahead make a room feel navigable to someone who has just arrived.

Get in touch with your name, institution, programme and graduation year, where you are now, and how you are willing to help. We will add you to the alumni network and make introductions where they fit.
If you are a current student looking to speak with a graduate in your field, contact us the same way and tell us what you are studying.
